Specialized ultrasound-guided treatments (injections)

Your physiatry and diagnostic ultrasound consultation may also include an ultrasound-guided treatment. If indicated, and after speaking to the patient, the physician can use the ultrasound to guide the treatment (injection) with a very high level of precision. Ultrasound guidance makes it possible to see the progression of the needle until it reaches its intended target. It helps minimize pain and risk during injections and maximize precision and treatment efficacy—these injections have a nearly 100% precision rate. Without guidance, that rate could fall to 33% since more injections would fail to reach their targets.

Using local anesthetics, ultrasound-guided treatments are administered with minimum pain and in strict aseptic conditions to prevent infection. Depending on the type of treatment, a leave of absence from work and a break from athletic activities may be required for a few days following the treatment. Side-effects are usually minor and temporary. Complications are rare (see PATIENT INFORMATION for further advice and details on injections).
